Bus Fares Increasing Across Greater Portland, Saco, and Old Orchard Beach Beginning August 1

by Jon Fetherston | Jun 29, 2026

Riders using Greater Portland Metro and BSOOB Transit will soon pay more to use most bus services as both transit agencies implement a systemwide fare adjustment effective Aug. 1.

The increase, approved by the Metro Board of Directors and the BSOOB Transit Committee, marks the first fare hike since late 2020. Transit officials said the additional revenue is needed to help maintain service levels and offset rising operating costs.

Under the new fare structure, the base cash fare for local routes will increase from $2.00 to $2.25, affecting riders traveling throughout the Greater Portland region, including connecting routes between Portland, Saco, and Old Orchard Beach.

Several other fare changes will also take effect:

  • Base cash fare: increasing from $2.00 to $2.25
  • Metro BREEZ express fare: increasing from $4.00 to $4.50
  • BSOOB Zoom service: decreasing from $5.00 to $4.50 to align with the Metro BREEZ express fare
  • Reduced fare: increasing from $1.00 to $1.10

Transit officials said the updated fare structure is intended to generate additional revenue while ensuring continued service across the region amid increasing operational expenses.

The new fares will take effect on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2026.

Additional information about the fare changes and route schedules is available through Greater Portland Metro and BSOOB Transit.
