The Maine State Police Department is investigating after a Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) worker from Lewiston was struck by a vehicle while working on a Gardiner job site.

At approximately 1:43 p.m., state troopers responded to reports of a crash on I-295 northbound in Gardiner.

The caller reported that the crash involved an SUV and an MDOT worker.

A preliminary investigation revealed that MDOT crews were working to remove tire debris from the road at the time of the crash.

Three workers were on scene along with an MDOT truck with active amber warning lights parked in the breakdown lane.

Two workers remained in the truck while a third, a 57-year-old man from Lewiston, exited to remove debris near the right-hand fog line.

While removing the debris, the worker was reportedly struck by a 2021 Cadillac SUV operated by a 39-year-old woman from Gardiner.

The worker was transported by Gardiner Rescue to Maine General Medical Center in Augusta for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation, and police did not name the driver involved or specify whether speed or impairment were factors in the crash.
