The Oxford Sheriff’s Department found two eight-year-old girls safe on Wednesday hours after they were reported missing from a Mexico school.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a school resource officer working at the Mountain Valley Community School in Mexico learned that two eight-year-old students had run away from the school on foot.

Both children are under the custody of the Maine Office of Child and Family Services (OCFS) and live in Rumford.

The Oxford Sheriff’s Department was alerted to the missing children hours after the school resource officer learned of their absence and immediately began a search.

The Maine Warden Service also joined, along with the Maine State Police and the Mexico Fire Department.

Hours after the girls were first reported missing, the Oxford Sheriff’s Department announced at 8:06 p.m. that the girls had been found safe.

Rescue staff evaluated them and found that they were uninjured, though they were found cold and wet.
