If you’ve got a can of rat poison out in the barn, guard it with your life.

The rodenticide is now illegal across Maine.

The Board of Pesticide Control has voted to ban its sale, action in keeping with LD 356.

The law, which the Legislature adopted last year, directed the board to prohibit the consumer use of rodenticides.

The measure is designed to prevent the spread of chemical toxins often found in owls, eagles, pets, and other non-targeted wildlife, according to the Maine Audubon Society.

The board’s vote Friday means hardware stores will have to pull the rodenticides from their shelves.

Online retailers will also have to stop shipping the chemicals to Maine consumers by June 15.
