The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) warned against underestimating Graham Platner’s electoral chances in a Wednesday memo following his primary victory and urged Republicans to campaign with “urgency.”
“For Democrats, this race is not about the individual on the ballot; it is entirely about control of the Senate. Although Platner faces a series of damaging stories, including an infamous Nazi tattoo and abuse allegations from multiple women that would have ended most campaigns, national Democrats have rallied around him,” said the NRSC.
“Senator Collins has won tough races before and can win this one, but only if we meet this moment with total urgency,” they added.
The memo, obtained by Fox News, highlights the vital importance of Maine’s race for Republicans if they want to retain the Senate.
“Maine has become more than a battleground state in this year’s fight for control of the Senate. It has become a linchpin. Because Democrats cannot win the majority without it, they have fully rallied around Graham Platner,” said the memo.
The NRSC expressed a belief that the Democratic establishment and voters are supporting Platner despite his mountain of controversies because they are supporting the party over the individual.
“Platner has captured his party’s financial backing, outraising Senator Collins in every quarter since entering the race. We must match both the energy and the money to retain the seat,” the NRSC said.
The memo serves as a warning for Republicans who take a Collins victory for granted due to her past record and those who believe controversies alone will be enough to sink Platner’s campaign.
