Ditching the Status Quo

by Randall Poulton | Mar 11, 2026

In case you lost your list, let me remind you that Troy Jackson is running for Governor. Jackson pretends he is a logger. But, in fact, he is now a career politician and his gubernatorial campaign is not going well. So, Jackson has decided he needs to get tough. Here is his new elevator speech:

“I’ve been in the Maine Legislature for 20 years. I’ve been watching people with power and influence basically screw us: Making it hard for people to make a living. Making it hard to make their payments. Making it hard for people to have health insurance. It’s time to ditch the f-ing status quo.”

Ah yes, the status quo, maintained by those evil people with power and influence. The most powerful people in Maine politics are, in order, the Governor, the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House. And I agree with Jackson, they have, in many cases, screwed us. So, let’s put some names and initials on those evil power brokers who have run the State of Maine since 2000:

Maine Governors: Baldacci (D), LePage (R) and now, for the last eight years, Janet Mills (D).

President of the Senate: Mike Michaud (D), Rick Bennett (R), Beth Edmonds (D), Bev Daggett (D), Libby Mitchell (D), Kevin Raye (R), Justin Alfond (D), Mike Tibodeau (R) and Troy Jackson (D) and now Mattie Daughtry (D). In summary, for 18 of the last 26 years, the Democrats have controlled the Senate, including for six years when Jackson himself was President!

Speaker of the House: Steve Rowe (D), Mike Saxl (D), Pat Colwell (D), John Richardson (D), Glenn Cummings (D), Hannah Pingree (D), Bob Nutting (R), Mark Eaves (D), Sara Gideon (D), Ryan Fecteau (D), Rachael Talbot Ross (D), and now Fecteau 2.0. In summary, for 24 of the last 26 years, the Democrats have controlled the Senate.

Enough history. Maybe what’s got Jackson dropping F-Bombs is the people controlling “the status quo” in Augusta right now: Gee Troy, it seems it is the Democrats that control the Blaine House, the Senate, the House of Representatives! And it is the Ds that chair EVERY committee in Augusta. Is this the status quo you want to “F-ing ditch”? Because, if so, I am right there with you!
