We now know the woman killed by ICE, Renee Nicole Good, was trained by an anti-ICE group called "ICE Watch". We also know that Nicole Good recently married Rebecca Brown Good, and that it was at the urging of her wife that Nicole Good spent the last hour or two of her life attempting to obstruct ICE. Based on the video, my take is that the shooting was justified, but unfortunate. As usual, context is important: Nicole Good was already “wanted” for her role in an earlier confrontation with ICE.
But what is even more unfortunate is the reaction of Maine's Governor. Here is her statement, sentence by sentence, and my comments:
Mills: "The killing of a young woman in Minneapolis by an ICE agent today is a horrific tragedy,”
RP: I agree. Too bad Mills did not leave it at that. But, as always, if it’s bad, it must be Trump’s fault.
Mills: “President Trump has weaponized ICE into an unaccountable, masked, armed force deployed at his will to target those he opposes."
RP: In fact, like all law enforcement agencies, ICE is accountable. The shooting is being investigated by the FBI. When I watched the video, I saw exactly ONE masked agent. Perhaps he was sick or cold. In any case, since when is wearing a mask a bad thing? Not long ago, Mills DEMANDED I wear a mask! Of course, ICE agents are armed! So are the Capital Police in Augusta. To the extent President Trump "deployed" ICE, he did so to arrest criminals. Trump opposes criminals. So do I! He should target them. If ICE stops, the criminals win.
Mills: “It is a violation of American rights, a gross overstep of his authority, and a fundamentally un-American act that threatens the liberties of every person in this country, not simply those he targets from day to day.”
RP: I am not sure what "it" is. I completely agree that AMERICANS have rights. But people who are in America illegally have far fewer rights, among them is the right to leave without consequences. It is President Trump who offered illegals this option. Those who are here illegally, and have chosen to stay, should be arrested and deported. That is the job ICE is doing. The courts have ruled on the limits of Presidential authority. And, in most cases the courts have ultimately found Trump’s policies to be WITHIN Presidential authority. But Mills saved her most outrageous claim for last: (it was) a fundamentally un-American act that threatens the liberties of every person in this country. I don’t know a SINGLE person who feels threatened by Trump’s actions. Not One. But to be fair, the people I know are law-abiding citizens or legal immigrants. If criminals are scared, that is a good thing. Obstructing ICE is un-American and illegal.
