President Donald Trump referred to Graham Platner as a thug and speculated that he was the worst person to ever run for office during an Oval Office event after Platner’s primary victory.
“I watched that thug who’s up in Maine; he’s a thug, and they’re trying to make excuses for him. I mean, he’s worse than any human being that’s ever run for office probably,” said President Trump.
“This guy’s got a rap sheet; I’ve never seen anything like it. He’s a thug; I had to deal with thugs,” he added.
Trump’s comments came during a signing event for an immigration enforcement funding bill, after national attention fell on Maine during the primary due largely to the controversies plaguing Platner’s campaign.
He criticized the Democrats in Congress for supporting Platner, who has a long history of controversial statements online, insulting a Purple Heart recipient, allegedly physically abusing an ex-girlfriend, a cheating scandal, and a Nazi tattoo that he has repeatedly lied about.
He highlighted the double standard and mused on what would happen if the Republicans ran a similar candidate.
“Can you imagine if the Republicans had him?” asked Trump. “If it meant losing the Senate, you would not let that happen.”
“There’s never been a guy like that that’s ever run for office at any level,” he added.
Despite the unrelenting stream of new controversies striking the Platner Campaign, he won the Democratic Senate primary in a landslide with 71 percent of the vote and will now face off against Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) in what promises to be one of the most interesting general elections in the nation.
