MARIAVILLE, Maine — A home in Mariaville was destroyed Friday evening in a structure fire that investigators believe may have been caused by a lithium-ion battery.

The Mariaville Fire Department responded to 266 Peninsula Drive just after 6 p.m. on Friday, May 22, after receiving a report of a structure fire.

When firefighters arrived, they found the structure fully engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading into the surrounding wooded area.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to investigate the cause of the blaze. No occupants were home at the time of the fire.

After reviewing camera footage, investigators determined that the fire began in the attached garage area. Officials believe a lithium-ion battery may have caused the fire, which has been officially classified as accidental.

No injuries were reported.

Two cats remain missing following the fire.
