The Maine State Police are investigating after a body was found during routine operations at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on Wednesday.

At approximately 9:50 a.m., the Kittery shipyard’s civilian divers were conducting routine barge inspections.

While in the area of Berth 14, they discovered human remains in the water.

The Maine State Police and Naval Criminal Investigative Service are investigating the situation.

The remains will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for identification, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death.

Police provided scant details and said that no additional information is yet available.

It is not clear whether the remains appeared to be from a recent death.
