Bath Iron Works secured a contract to construct the Navy’s next guided missile destroyer, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) announced on Wednesday.

“Today, the U.S. Navy awarded Bath Iron Works a contract to build the next DDG-51 Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. This award is a testament to the highly skilled and hard-working men and women of BIW and once again shows that “Bath Built is Best Built,” said Sen. Collins.

The new destroyer will be DDG-149, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, the most numerous class of U.S. naval warships.

Destroyers of the same class have been operating in the Strait of Hormuz during the Iran War.

The class of ship is named after the World War II destroyer admiral, and the specific ship to be constructed in Bath will be named after Robert R. Ingram, a retired Navy Hospital Corpsman Third Class.

Ingram is a Vietnam veteran and Medal of Honor recipient. He was awarded the medal after heroically continuing to assist wounded Marines during an active firefight even after receiving four gunshot wounds himself.
