GLENBURG, Maine – A Glenburn homeowner suffered minor injuries Saturday evening after a MAP gas container ignited near a wood stove, sparking a basement fire that drew a response from several area fire departments.
The Glenburn Fire Department responded at approximately 7:02 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, to a reported residential structure fire.
When firefighters arrived, crews acted quickly to contain the fire to the basement area, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the residence. Officials said there was no additional fire extension beyond the basement.
The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office was requested to respond to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Investigators later determined that the fire originated in the basement.
The cause was identified as a MAP gas container that had been knocked over near a wood stove, resulting in ignition. The homeowner attempted to move the container away from the fire, but during that effort, the container was inadvertently pushed beneath a wooden workbench, which then caught fire.
The homeowner sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by EMS.
Officials ruled the fire accidental.
Mutual aid was provided by the Kenduskeag Fire Department, Levant Fire Department, Bangor Fire Department, Air National Guard Fire Department, and Hermon Fire Department.
