According to the National Weather Service, the snowstorm on Sunday pushed the total snowfall in Bangor this winter to 70 inches, which is a bit above "normal". Based on heating degree days, the winter has also been colder than normal. The 10-day outlook continues this cold and snowy trend.
On this day in 2012, it was 84 degrees in Bangor. It seems that might have been the pinnacle of Global Warming. Here we are, fourteen years later, and it is colder than normal. I think what we are experiencing is called “weather”.
The Bernie Bros in congress are pushing a tax on Billionaires to pay for the Democrats unbridled spending. Bulletin to this group of brainiacs: There are only about 1,000 billionaires in the USA. If you slap them each with an extra MILLION DOLLAR tax, that would collect an extra 1,000 million dollars, aka one billion dollars. That’s peanuts compared to how our government wastes money. Let's put that BILLION dollars in context:
· Somali fraudsters in Minnesota have STOLEN almost $10 BILLION from the government. That’s ten times what the new million-dollar tax on billionaires would raise!
· My guess is Medicare/Medicaid fraud in Maine will total another half BILLION. Maybe more. So, an amount equal to half of the money raised by the new million-dollar tax on billionaires has already been stolen right here in Maine!
· The Interest on the national debt is almost $3 BILLION PER DAY. So, if we made every billionaire pay a special $3 million tax, the money collected would pay the interest on the national debt for just one day.
But here is the thing: MONEY is portable. If you piss off rich people, they will move and take their money with them. There are so many rich people moving to tax-free Florida, Gov Desantis believes the state can afford to abolish real estate taxes!
Meanwhile, our Governor seems to like to pick fights she can’t win. Last week, Dr. Mehmet Oz, head of Medicare, issued a scathing statement blasting Maine’s poor management of our Medicaid program. Instead of promising to have DHS fix the mess, or even staying silent, Mills got angry and blew off Oz calling him a “TV Doctor”. According to what I found on line, the TV doctor has a BS from Havard, a Masters and a MD from UPenn. Early in his career, Oz served as chief of thoracic surgery at The Delaware Medical Center, before moving to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where he specialized in heart transplants. It was Oz who, during the 1986 World Series, led the team of surgeons that performed a successful heart transplant on Frank Torre, brother to Yankees manager Joe Torre. The bottom line is the TV doctor is the one who signs the checks that pay for a large part of Maine’s Medicaid program. Or, at least he used to.
