A Hartford man was shot and killed by Oxford County Sheriff’s deputies during a domestic assault incident after the man allegedly advanced towards the deputies with a knife.

According to the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, shortly after 4:40 p.m. on Sunday, Oxford and Androscoggin County deputies responded to 911 call from an 80-year-old man reporting a domestic assault at 229 Tucker Rd. in Hartford by his step son, 51-year-old Eric Newell.

Attempts to de-escalate the situation with Newell were unsuccessful, and Newell exited the residence and advanced toward the deputies armed with a knife, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Oxford Deputies Reece Rodrique and Derek MacDonald issued commands to Newell but he failed to comply, and the two deputies shot Newell fatally.

Deputies Rodrique and MacDonald have both been placed on administrative leave and the Maine Attorney General’s Office will be investigating the use of deadly force in the incident, as is standard protocol in cases of officer involved shootings.
