Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) admitted during a 60 Minutes interview on Sunday that he “can’t think of a rational argument” for U.S. taxpayers to stop sending Ukraine hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars.
“I always try to think of, you know, what’s the argument on both sides? I cannot think of a rational argument for pulling our support for Ukraine,” said Sen. King during the interview.
“I think they [Congress] have to start speaking up, because if we persist in walking away from Ukraine, it will be the greatest geopolitical mistake that this country has made since World War Two,” he added.
King has long been one of Congress’ most vocal advocates for sending increasing and seemingly limitless sums of money to Ukraine, and for escalating U.S. involvement that could risk a direct, nuclear conflict between Russia and the U.S.
During the interview, King also expressed disgust that the U.S. voted with Russia in the U.N. against a resolution condemning Russia for the war and demanding their withdrawal from Ukraine on the third anniversary of their invasion which fell on February 24.
The U.S. instead proposed a separate resolution mourning the loss of life and calling for an end to the war, without condemning Russia or expressing support for Ukraine.
“The first message it sent to me was shame,” said King, speaking on the U.N resolution during his 60-Minutes interview.
The interview gave King the opportunity to express his discontent with President Donald Trump’s approach for reaching peace in Ukraine after the president’s contentious meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday.
That meeting was expected to lead to a deal between the U.S. and Ukraine on the embattled nation’s mineral reserves, but instead left Zelenskyy empty-handed because President Trump said he is not willing to accept a ceasefire.
“I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace,” said Trump on Truth Social following his televised meeting with Zelenskyy.
King has previously claimed, in response to questions from The Maine Wire, that there is no evidence that any funds sent to Ukraine have been mishandled or embezzled. He also expressed a belief that if Russia conquers Ukraine, Putin will march his armies across Europe.
“The data that I’ve seen is that it’s been very carefully handled, and most of the money for Ukraine is going into the U.S. economy,” said King.
“If Putin isn’t stopped now, he will keep going, Moldova, Poland, the Baltic States. And if you doubt that, why did the Finns and Swedes decide to join NATO after 80 years,” he added.
