Merit vs. Identity: Rethinking What Qualifies for White House Leadership
Should White House occupancy be based on meritorious individual
accomplishment, party affiliation, or personality traits? In our “advanced” society, it was distressing last week to see a former President openly advocate for public ballot support to be based on race and gender, specifically exhorting black men to rally behind a candidate woman of color.
This shameful attempt to bolster a faltering campaign speaks to the candidate’s controversial strategy of minimizing public exposure and failing to define and make a compelling case for any detailed policy initiatives. As a supposed proponent of joyful change to a vague “opportunity-based economy,” her quest for leadership sadly has become embarrassingly dependent on the lingering influence of party personalities from a bygone era.
