Choosing Leaders: Common Sense vs. Party Loyalty in Presidential Elections
I can think of about 40 current issues that might cause someone to vote for one presidential candidate over another. Imagine yourself in the shoes of that would-be leader. Which concerns get the attention of a clear majority of the American public?Which decisions are easiest to make, and which are likely to be most contentious? Is it fair to yourself and others to be a single-issue voter when so many are presented?
In the final analysis, shouldn’t all of us be looking for the candidate displaying the most common-sense reasoning across the board? He or she isn’t going to suit you on every subject, but you should get a sense of the depth and validity of their reasoning beyond the party line, if any.The number who religiously adopt the prescribed position too often is astonishing and discouraging.
Do we elect perceptive people or party parrots?Would you have greater respect for party members who openly disclosed subjects on which they are not in full agreement with the official position?
