A man who led police on multiple chases through the Portland area late last year has pleaded guilty to the illegal possession of a firearm due to multiple prior felony convictions.

Mohamud Abdullahi, 31, who entered his guilty plea in U.S. District Court in Portland on Monday, was the subject of two police chases involving the South Portland and Portland Police Departments in November and December of 2023.

On Nov 22., 2023, Abdullahi was suspected of firing several rounds from a firearm in the area of 262 Commercial St. in Portland.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine, Abdullahi pulled a firearm from his waistband and fired two shots into the air, before fleeing in his vehicle.

Abdullahi was pursued by police across the Casco Bay Bridge into South Portland, and after being stopped proceeded to flee on foot into the backyards of nearby houses — at one point “literally running through a wooden fence during his getaway,” police stated at the time.

He was eventually arrested and charged with refusing to submit to arrest and assault after “spitting in the face of one of our police officers,” South Portland Police said.

The firearm used in the shots-fired incident was recovered the following day from the front lawn of a residence from where the vehicle had been stopped in South Portland, federal prosecutors said.

In early December, while out on $10,000 cash bail for the Nov. 22 incident, Abdullahi was arrested in connection to a home invasion in which he allegedly entered a home on South Kelsey Street in South Portland and threatened occupants with a firearm, demanding money.

Abdullahi has multiple previous felony-level convictions in Cumberland County, including for assault and aggravated criminal trespass in 2017, and unlawful trafficking of scheduled drugs in 2011. Those convictions bar him from legally possessing firearms.

After pleading guilty, Abdullahi faces up to 15 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.
