My name is Ron Russell and I am running for the U.S. Congress to represent the citizens of the 1st Congressional District in the Great State of Maine. First and foremost, I am a Mainer. I was born and raised in Fort Fairfield, the son of a potato farmer and an elementary school teacher. I was raised with a brother and three sisters and they were all successful in life because they learned the lessons that my parents taught all of us – examples like the value of hard work, the value of a good education, discipline, taking responsibility for one’s actions, all sprinkled with a fine sense of humor.

My brother recommended that I go to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, so I applied and was accepted. I graduated in 1976 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry like my father before me. I am an Airborne Ranger Green Beret and I served for 30 years in some of the finest units in the United States Army. I commanded what was, in the opinion of many, the finest unit in the Department of Defense. I deployed to over 60 countries and had the opportunity to see how others lived around the globe. Suffice it to say that, in my opinion, we live in the greatest country on this earth.

My military service prepared me to make quick decisions about complex subjects without having all the information needed. I can think of no more complex of a problem than one that involves the lives of the soldiers under one’s command. In addition, I learned about resourcing a command with a limited budget yet still being able to accomplish the missions I was given.

After I retired in 2006, I worked for a small defense contractor. When that company was purchased by a large defense contractor, three friends and I split away and started our own company. We grew that company from a small business to a large business. At one point in time we were signing the paychecks for over 150 employees. I got to see first-hand how the government can help or hurt a business – unfortunately it was more of the latter. This experience prepared me well for the job that I am currently seeking.

I returned to Maine with the intention of running for this office. I felt helpless about where our nation was headed shortly after the start of this administration. We need to get the nation back on track. I will focus on three primary issues as we move forward – the economy, immigration, and education. These issues cannot be discussed as separate issues because there is too much connective tissue between the three. Solutions for one issue may positively (or negatively) impact the feasibility, suitability, and acceptability of another solution.

I believe I’m the right man for this job. I believe that because I have been responsible for the lives of the men and women under my command. I have also been responsible for the livelihood of the employees under my direction. I have signed the front of paychecks, not just the back. That experience sets me apart from my competitor.
