Sheltering Moms, Nurturing Babies
It’s like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. But when you plant the seed, it grows. It becomes the largest of all garden plants. Its branches are so big that birds can rest in its shade. Mark 4:31-32
A VISION IS BORN
At 17 Cheryl was a young mom with an unexpected pregnancy. She experienced so many thoughts, fears and questions of the unknown. “How would I do this? How was my life going to change? What if I wasn't enough? What if, what if, what if?” echoed in her every thought.
She was fortunate to have love and support from family, yet no one had walked through this challenge before. She wanted to appear strong and confident to those around her. How much of this could have been eased just a bit if there were a few with whom she could share her fears.
Through the years she has dreamed of a place where she could help nurture others through that difficult time and help them to see the beauty and wonder of how their life was changing. At times she questioned if this dream would ever happen.
Cheryl is now a mother of five grown children and grandmother of five. “I am at a place where I can devote my time and effort to making this dream a reality.” she confidently shares.
THE VISION GROWS
In 2019, with the help of others who also recognized the need and shared this vision, a steering committee was formed. They began meeting regularly to brainstorm their vision of a faith-based, non-profit residential home, in Maine. This home would shelter expectant mothers through pregnancy and offer them hope and support while raising their babies through the first year.
All mothers are welcome without regard to race, national origin, socioeconomic status or religious affiliation. Services and products provided by Life House Maine are donor supported, at no cost to the residents and include food, shelter, life skills and parenting classes, mentoring, and transportation.
THE VISION LAUNCHES
In 2023 we acquired The Charlane M. Chapman House in Hebron, Maine. It’s located amongst beautiful farmlands, while just a quick drive to the conveniences of town.
After three years of looking for the right location our realtor connected us with a family wanting to use their property to serve the community. Their generosity has helped our dream become a reality.
Our new home comes with 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, a large family-style kitchen, and carriage house. Volunteers have been busy cleaning and organizing inside and out.
What a blessed year we have had. All our planning and hard work paid off, and the Lord has been more than faithful in His divine provision and direction. We were thrilled to receive our first mom in July, and then our first newborn in August to the Charlane M. Chapman House.
We launched our quarterly Volunteer Orientation sessions, as we began training our support teams. Our property management team has been busy maintaining our new home and grounds.
