An Ecuadorian national stopped by Brunswick Police in January for driving without a seatbelt has pleaded guilty in federal court to illegally reentering the United States after a prior removal.
According to court records, 37-year-old Juan Pablo Clabijo Tacuri was observed operating a vehicle without a seatbelt by Brunswick Police on Jan. 27.
The Brunswick Police officer approached Clabijo Tacuri after he pulled into a gas station parking lot.
When asked for his license, Clabijo Tacuri presented a Massachusetts driver’s license with a false name, court records show.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine said that immigration records show that the Ecuadorian national had previously been deported from the U.S. on four separate occasions, and did not have a visa or other documentation allowing him to reenter the United States.
Clabijo Tacuri pleaded guilty on Thursday in U.S. District Court in Portland to illegally entering the U.S. after a prior removal, a charge that carries a maximum prison sentence of two years and a fine up to $250,000.
