Maine Government: Transparent or Obscure? Calls for Efficiency Audit Grow
Would you say that Maine government is relatively low in visibility and transparency? Our population seems to have become accustomed to thinking of it as a caretaker and regulator rather than a potential instrument of adaptive and creative socio-economic change. How many of us are aware of constructive initiatives taken by 15 Departments or any of 216 agencies, bureaus and other reference points? How would their employees respond to questioning as to what they had accomplished last week? In what terms is their contribution evaluated? Might any be combined, subsumed or eliminated? Would all of us benefit from a state-level independent investigative survey of government efficiency? Who but potentially exposed executive and administrative personnel would object to such a housecleaning test?
