Musk Reveals Troubling Tallies in Social Security Database: More Entries than Total U.S. Population

Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) chief Elon Musk released new information about the U.S. Social Security database on Sunday, showing that the system appears to believe that millions of deceased persons remain alive, hinting at a possibly massive scheme to defraud American taxpayers.

“According to the Social Security database, these are the numbers of people in each age bucket with the death field set to FALSE! Maybe Twilight is real and there are a lot of vampires collecting Social Security,” said Musk on X.

The system currently represents that over 398 million people are alive and well and eligible to receive taxpayer-funded social security payouts, Musk’s disclosure indicates.

That number far exceeds the 341 million cited as the current U.S. population by the Census Bureau, meaning the number of living Americans listed in the Social Security database exceeds the nation’s population by 57 million – substantially more than the current population of California and several other states.

The list also includes a staggering 20.8 million people aged 100 years or older, including millions older than 122 (the age of death of Jeanne Calment, the oldest person whose age has been verified), 2,786 people over 200 years old, and one person in the 360-369 years of age bracket, over a hundred years older than the United States itself. According to Pew Research, the U.S. only had roughly 101,000 centenarians as of 2024.

Though the numbers do not necessarily show that all of the deceased people listed as eligible are still receiving payments, Musk and others suggested that the discrepancy could be evidence of massive fraud.

“This might be the biggest fraud in the history of humanity,” said Musk on X.

Musk provided additional details on the Social Security system, outlining the complexity of the system, suggesting that no one fully knows how it works and that he has already discovered other significant discrepancies in payment files.

“The logic flow diagram for the Social Security system looks INSANE. No one person actually knows how it works. The payment files that move between Social Security and Treasury have significant inconsistencies that are not reconciled. It’s wild,” said Musk.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) also weighed in on the newly released data.

“There are millions of people illegally receiving SS checks This is the largest fraud in US history!!! And no one would know if it weren’t for @elonmusk and @DOGE,” said Rep. Greene on X.

According to 2020 data, Social Security is expected to contribute a staggering $30.7 trillion to the national debt by 2050. The newly released data suggests that much of that funding could be paid out to scammers using the identities of the deceased to extract taxpayer funds.

As Musk, through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has worked to reveal wasteful or fraudulent spending across the federal government, Democrats have fought against greater transparency.

“I want to save billions of your money and make our government more efficient. Rummaging through your personal shit is *not* that. A party of chaos loses—always,” said Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) on X as other officials were contending with the apparent discrepancies in the Social Security system.
