At the start of this year, Democratic Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) signed onto a letter urging the Biden administration to send Ukraine the long-range tactical missile systems now being used to strike targets inside Russia for the first time.
Ukraine reportedly hit a Russian weapons arsenal with U.S. made Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) in Russia’s Bryansk region last night, marking the first time the longer-range American weapons have been used by Ukraine to strike targets deep inside Russia.
The move came after President Joe Biden greenlit Ukraine’s use for the American-made missile systems inside Russia on Sunday, ending what was a months-long prohibition against Ukraine’s use of the missiles on targets within Russian territory, in efforts to avoid escalation.
Rep. Jared Golden, who narrowly won reelection in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District after a ranked-choice tabulation last week, signed onto a letter in January alongside two of his House Democrat colleagues calling on the Biden administration to send Ukraine the long-range tactical missile systems to aid in their war with Russia.
The House Democrats’ letter, sent to Biden’s Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, said Ukraine’s use of the U.S.-made missile systems would help Ukraine win the war more quickly.
“Given reports of continued devastating war crimes committed by Russia’s long-range weapons, it’s more important than ever that we send Ukraine the longer-range ATACMS as soon as possible,” Rep. Golden and his colleagues wrote in the January letter.
The longer-range “unitary warhead” ATACMS can reach a maximum distance of approximately 180 miles, which the House Democrats said could therefore be used to “strike anywhere in Russian-occupied areas, including Crimea.”
“Providing Ukraine with longer-range, unitary-warheads ATACMS would contribute to a quicker Ukrainian victory, thus preventing further loss of life and reducing the cost of this war on Ukraine, the United States, and Europe,” they wrote. “We respectfully request that the Biden Administration send longer-range ATACMS to Ukraine without delay.”
Golden was joined on the letter by Democratic U.S. Reps. Ted Lieu (Calif.) and William Keating (Mass.).
