A Maine man who allegedly confronted and shot at Cumberland County Sheriff’s deputies with a firearm outside of a residence in Harrison was shot and left with serious injuries, the Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to Hawk Ridge Road in Harrison shortly after 1 p.m. on Wednesday, due to a report of an armed man who threatened to harm himself.

Cumberland County deputies responded to the residence, where the male subject, later identified as 57-year-old Arthur Lefebvre, was uncooperative and fired multiple rounds at law enforcement, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Law enforcement learned that other family members were present inside of the residence and at risk, and continued attempts to communicate with Lefebvre were unsuccessful.

When Lefebvre exited the residence and allegedly confronted the deputies with a firearm, the three Cumberland County deputies reportedly shot and injured Lefebvre, leaving him with serious injuries.

Lefebvre was transported by LifeFlight helicopter to Maine Medical Center where he is being treated. The Sheriff’s Office said that his injuries do not appear life threatening.

The Maine Attorney General’s Office will be conducting an investigation into the use of deadly force by law enforcement, while any potential criminal conduct related to the incident will be investigated by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The three Cumberland County deputies involved in the incident will be placed on administrative leave in accordance with standard protocol for incidents involving the use of deadly force. The Sheriff’s Office said the identities of the three deputies will be released at a later time.
