Transgender Athletes in Women’s Sports: Fairness or Rivalry?

by Phil Osifer | Nov 3, 2024

Have I had the wrong (male) perspective on the subject of mixed biological rivalry in athletic endeavors? Should we be sensitive to the personal shame and sense of inadequacy that must accompany a transgender athlete’s failure to win a women’s track competition? What remedies are available to relieve the physical and emotional stress of such defeat? Should victorious females feel an extra sense of satisfaction with their performance? I suppose the presence of a rival with a different chromosome could be viewed differently in a running event where personal safety should not be an issue. Should “she” be viewed as a “rabbit” pacesetter to stimulate group performance by over-achievement, or as a convenient excuse for finishing no better than second? Which is more gratifying? Does this suggest complicated handicapping based on personal best times? Isn’t it far easier to allow all comers to perform without depriving biological females from fair-minded recognition? Simply revise the recorded finish to separate a transvestite without depriving the top three women of their placement order and associated awards. Phil Osifer
