Bangor Warns of Illegal Ballot Harvesting

Bangor city officials warned residents on Tuesday that at least one person has been engaged in illegal ballot harvesting, going door-to-door asking people for their absentee ballots.

“As a voter, you need to protect your own ballot, and when you receive that from us make sure you are bringing that back in a manner that is acceptable,” said Bangor City Clerk Lisa Goodwin speaking to News Center Maine.

Only the recipient of the ballot, a family member, or a previously designated third party is allowed to deliver absentee ballots to a drop box or the city clerk’s office.

Bangor warned that anyone giving their ballot to an illegal ballot harvester risks having their ballots destroyed by the harvester or simply never delivered.

Officials informed Secretary of State Shenna Bellows’s office of the illegal harvesting.

“Our elections are very secure. Absentee ballots are traced and we anticipate a free, safe, and secure Election Day,” said Bellows.

Despite Bellow’s claim, she is yet to pursue an investigation into non-citizen voting in Maine after a Maine Wire investigation revealed at least six non-citizens are registered to vote in the state, and votes have been cast in the names of five of them since 2016.
