Two men, including one Chinese national, were arrested in Farmington on Monday after police discovered 115 pounds of marijuana in the back of a van after the pair was pulled over for speeding on Fairbanks Road.
The Monday afternoon traffic stop was made by Farmington Police Sgt. Jonathan Parker, who stopped the van on Fairbanks Road for speeding, Deputy Police Chief Shane Cote told the Lewiston Sun Journal.
Police called in a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) patrol to assist in the traffic stop.
When a border patrol agent asked the men what was inside of five bags that were in the back of the van, one of the men said “leaf,” according to Deputy Chief Cote.
“They had a large quantity of marijuana in the vehicle,” Cote said.
Cote told the Sun Journal that he used a Farmington Police pickup truck to bring the five bags to the station where the marijuana weighed in at 115 pounds, well over the legal possession limit.
Arrested was Jianlin Huang, 53, of Staten Island, N.Y., and Xuefeng Huang, 53, of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Both men were transported to the Franklin County Detention Center and charged with Class B unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs.
The two men were released from jail Wednesday morning on $5,000 cash bail, with appearances for both men scheduled for Dec. 3 in Franklin Unified Court.
Although the Lewiston Sun Journal described both men as “New York men,” booking records from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office indicate that Xuefeng Huang is a foreign national of the People’s Republic of China.
