Assessing Presidential Qualifications: Beyond Appearance to Effective Leadership and Experience

by Phil Osifer | Oct 24, 2024

The Presidency demands informed and reasoned judgment on a wide and changing range of timely issues, currently more than 40 by my count. Shockingly few Americans have been exposed to academic leadership courses at any level, making it difficult for them to identify with the multi-faceted demands of that position.Voters should recognize the necessity of dependence on Cabinet members, agency staff and the so-called “Deep State” for pertinent research and input – or simply reliance on the adopted party line. Legitimate qualifications for the Presidency go far beyond personal appearance, public presence, and message delivery. The highest level of leadership requires experiential knowledge of organization, management, communication, motivation, interpretation and mutual trust with a supporting cast. It also demands a level of self-confidence enabling (a) questioning and rejection of supporters’ special-interest requests and (b) collegial acceptance of worthwhile initiatives presented by the opposing party. Once both party ballots are confirmed, the media barrage of sound-byte catch phrases abates, and the respective handlers’ work is finished in a couple of months, it’s time to step back and survey the whole landscape.Does your candidate‘s resume represent the principled breadth of experience and perspective needed for effective prioritization and resolution of the full slate of 2024 challenges?
