Law enforcement seized three firearms from an Ogunquit inn housing 20 noncitizen “scholar” visa holders after a report of shots fired led to an hours-long shutdown of part of Route 1, according the Ogunquit Police Department.
Police say that at approximately 3:50 a.m. on Monday, the Wells Emergency Dispatch Center received a report of shots fired at the Hideaway Inn, located at 67 Main St. in Ogunquit.
Officers from the Ogunquit, Wells and York Police Departments responded to the scene, and upon arrival encountered a group of people outside who fled to inside of the inn upon seeing law enforcement, police said.
Police say that attempts to establish communication with the people inside of the inn were unsuccessful, and that there was no response to phone calls or commands from the officers on scene — prompting police to call in the Southern Maine Response Team for assistance.
As a precautionary measure, police put out an advisory asking residents to avoid the area and to lock their doors while authorities investigated the reported shots fired.
Ogunquit Police Chief John Lizanecz told WMTW that responding officers were met with “cultural barriers” as the Hideaway Inn has been operating as a dormitory, housing about 20 J-1 visa holders.
“This was a party that happened last night,” Lizanecz told WMTW. “We have found remnants of fireworks outside and all the people involved are being relatively cooperative with us.”
The J-1 visa classification refers to noncitizen “exchange visitors” who are in the U.S. for an approved program, such as for teaching, studying, conducting research, or receiving training.
According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigrant Services (USCIS), the designation can include noncitizen “professors or scholars,” research assistants, students, au pairs, camp counselors, and more.
At about 11 a.m. on Monday, Ogunquit Police put out an update stating that the incident had been resolved, and that Rt. 1 had been fully reopened.
However, the incident led to Ogunquit Town Hall remaining closed for the entire day, as it was being used by police and “to support those displaced,” the department said in a Facebook post.
In a follow-up press release issued later Monday afternoon, Ogunquit Police said that officers on scene were eventually able to establish contact with the people inside the inn, leading to a “peaceful resolution.”
As a result of the investigation, police seized two handguns and one rifle from the Hideaway Inn property, along with shell casings.
Police said that no injuries were reported in relation to the incident.
“The Ogunquit Police Department would like to reassure the public that there is no ongoing threat related to this incident,” they stated. “However, the matter remains under investigation.”
No arrests were announced in connection to the incident.
