All members of Maine’s Congressional delegation have now spoken out in response to the second attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump (R).
“I’m glad former President Trump is unharmed and grateful to the Secret Service for their vigilance,” said Rep. Jared Golden (D) on X.
“While there’s still much we don’t know as law enforcement conducts its investigation, we do know one thing,” Rep. Golden said. “Political violence of any kind has no place in America.”
State Representative Austin Theriault (R-Fort Kent) — the candidate running against Golden in hopes of representing Maine’s second district — also issued a statement on the former president’s second attempted assassination.
“I’m thankful President Trump is unharmed,” Rep. Theriault said on X. “What an awful day for our country.”
“I’m relieved former President Trump is safe and that no one was injured,” said Rep. Chellie Pingree (D) of the first congressional district. “Political violence of any kind has no place in America.”
Sen. Susan Collins (R) released a statement expressing a similar sentiment.
“It is horrifying that there has been yet another assassination attempt on President Trump’s life,” Sen. Collins wrote. “I am relieved that he is safe and unharmed.”
Sen. Angus King (I) also expressed concern over the second attempt on former president’s life in a statement on X.
“The news of an attempted assassination on former President Trump is terrible,” said Sen. King. “We can and will disagree on issues, but we need to lower the temperature on rhetoric and action.”
“Political violence of any kind is wrong and goes against the core American values we believe in,” King said.
Vice President Kamala Harris (D) — former President Trump’s opponent — also issued a statement on X regarding the attempt on his life.
“I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe,” Vice President Harris said. “Violence has no place in America.”
President Joe Biden (D) released a statement regarding what happened Sunday, indicating that he had been briefed on the “possible assassination attempt” of the former president, noting relief that Trump was “unharmed” and, like many others, stating that “there is no place for political violence” in America.
“I have been briefed by my team regarding what federal law enforcement is investigating as a possible assassination attempt of former President Trump today,” said President Biden. “A suspect is in custody, and I commend the work of the Secret Service and their law enforcement partners for their vigilance and their efforts to keep the former President and those around him safe.”
“I am relieved that the former President is unharmed,” he continued. “There is an active investigation into this incident as law enforcement gathers more details about what happened.”
“As I have said many times, there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country, and I have directed my team to continue to ensure that Secret Service has every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to ensure the former President’s continued safety,” Biden concluded.
