If you woke up on Monday and found the internet filled with memes of former President Donald Trump rescuing kittens or ducks, or found AI images of Vice President Kamala Harris cooking cats, we might be able to offer an explanation.
The story begins with a Biden-Harris refugee resettlement program that brought hundreds of thousands of Haitians into the U.S. Although almost every major city in the U.S. has been impacted by the illegal, legal, and quasi-legal immigration policies emanating from the White House, one town in Ohio has been hit particular hard.
That’s because part of the Biden-Harris agenda relocated 20,000 jobless, homeless Haitians into Springfield, Ohio, previously only a town of under 60,000 residents. The Haitian government collapsed earlier this year, with reports of cannibalistic gangs running amok, adding to an ongoing mass exodus from the troubled island nation. That exodus has brought hundreds of thousands to the U.S., including many who have benefitted from the Biden-Harris Admin’s resettlement programs. But Springfield, it turns out, isn’t getting Haiti’s finest, as demonstrated by the dozens and dozens of public — and often viral — complaints that native Springfielders have been posting to social media.
The cat and duck memes began after multiple conservative social media accounts started highlighting statements from Springfield locals claiming that the Haitian immigrants have been killing and eating ducks and geese from local parks, and even abducting and cooking pet cats. The claims appeared to be bolstered by witness pictures and even police video.
“They’re in the park grabbing up ducks by they neck and cutting they head off and walking off with them and eating them,” said a local resident speaking at a city council meeting.
The conservative accounts also brought public attention to a post from a local Facebook group. The post told the story of a local girl who lost her cat. After a lengthy search, the girl discovered her cat hanging from her Haitian neighbors’ tree, being carved for dinner. The post reaffirmed the stories of ducks being taken from local parks and claimed dogs were also being stolen.
A video also began circulating, appearing to show Ohio police interrogating a woman who allegedly killed and ate her neighbor’s cat, although The Maine Wire cannot verify the video’s authenticity.
That was the origin of numerous memes, some coming from politicians, claiming that Trump will stop Harris from allowing immigrants to eat their cats.
Even Vice Presidential nominee J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) latched onto the issue, highlighting the failures of Harris as border czar as a cause for the Springfield chaos.
While it’s not likely that Harris has any plans to start barbecuing park geese or stewing cats, as some memes suggested, she had previously bragged on The View that she had helped 100,000 Haitian immigrants into the country.
“More recently, we extended temporary protective status to over a hundred thousand Haitian migrants,” said Harris.
In other news, at least 16 cats disappeared from Bangor’s Fairmount neighborhood over the course of just two months this summer…
The Pine Tree Pulse
As “wildfire season” sweeps across California and Canada (due more to poor forest management than climate change), Maine is facing its own series of fires. An apartment building in Jay and a beloved Damariscotta restaurant were reduced to rubble last week after catching fire. Now, another apartment building has been reduced to ash following a fire on Sunday night. The fire struck an under-construction apartment building in Auburn that was set to hold 80 living units. Over 100 first responders were involved in the attempts to quell the flames, but the building nevertheless could not be saved. No injuries were reported, and firefighters were able to prevent the blaze from spreading. The recent apartment fires will only serve to exacerbate Maine’s growing housing crisis.
The barbaric school shooting in Georgia last week put the nation’s schools on high alert. After the Georgia school was warned about the threat posed by the shooter and did nothing, Maine’s schools are determined to avoid a similar tragedy. The Portland Press Herald has the latest on a credible threat that led to school closures across Bethel. Students were given the day off from school after the MSAD 44 school district in Bethel received a “credible threat” against its Telstar middle and high schools. School officials are working with the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department to deal with the threat. The sheriff has not shared details about the nature of the threat. All four schools in MSAD 44’s jurisdiction were closed on Monday, and the district has not indicated whether they will be reopened by Tuesday.
The Bangor Daily News has an update on the hotly contested race for Maine’s Second Congressional District’s (CD2) seat in the U.S. House. The Maine branch of the National Rifle Association (NRA) endorsed State Rep. Austin Theriault’s (R-Fort Kent) bid over incumbent U.S. Rep. Jared Golden (D). Rep. Golden previously received a “B” rating from the NRA for his stance on guns after he ran for office as a rare pro-Second Amendment Democrat. That stance changed following the tragic shooting in Lewiston last October, after which Golden began to call for a ban on “assault weapons.” The NRA has accordingly updated its rating on Golden, reducing his score to an “F,” and warned that Golden will strip Mainers of their Second Amendment rights if given the opportunity. In Maine’s conservative CD2, Golden’s dramatic shift on gun control could lose him the election
