Not a Democracy
Everyone in the Democratic party seems to scream, “We are losing our Democracy!” They connect Democracy with Democrat. This is far from truth on many levels.
First, the United States is NOT a Democracy. It is a Constitutional Republic. What’s the difference, you ask? A “Democracy” simply means we are “a system of government by the whole populace (a majority) or all the eligible members of a state.” A Constitutional Republic is “a form of government where citizens elect representatives to make laws by following a written Constitution that protects the rights of the minority.” Rule by majority vs rule by laws.
Second, A Democracy, or majority ruling government, is about social equity. This is a concept that refers to justice and fairness of social policy. Social equity considers systemic inequities that affect different groups of people, however, there is no assurance that all groups have an equal outcome. It means different things to different people. A Constitutional Republic is a representative form of government which follows laws that secure the rights of all, especially the minorities, who would not otherwise have a chance for an equal outcome. Everyone is considered in the same way or equally.
In a Democracy, the majority of the citizens have unlimited power and can make laws that affect the minority, often in a negative way. Think big cities making rules for every citizen in their state or, worse, every citizen in the country, because they have the numbers, population, to make the rules/laws. This tyranny of the majority would negate the votes in places with small populations, like Maine, North and South Dakota, New Hampshire, Vermont, etc. This is what the National Popular Vote (NPV) is trying to accomplish.
A Constitutional Republic protects minority rights, separates power between Legislative, Judicial and Executive branches to prevent absolute power, and uses rule of law where every citizen is subject to codified, or consistent and voted for, laws. Citizen involvement is essential to fair and impartial governing. Minorities get equal input. Government is constrained.
A “Democracy” isn’t so equal after all.
