Beyond the Presidency: How Congress Shapes Our Country’s Future
Both political parties want us to focus on the personalities and
programs of their high-profile standard-bearers, Joe Biden and Donald
Trump. In reality, the voting public probably should be paying more
attention to (1) the respective running mates as potential successors
and (2) the members of Congress to be entrusted with responsibility for
legislative enactment. Given their respective ages and health, there
is a real possibility that neither presidential candidate, if elected,
would be able to complete a full four-year term.
Consequently, there is more than a remote chance that, for medical,
legal or strategic reasons, we can’t really assume who will be leading
the donkey and elephant political slates by November 8. I certainly
hope that any he/her/it/x/they/them backup will have a demonstrable
record of beneficial accomplishment.
